The results of the 5th Annual Aydın Memecik Extra Virgin Olive Oil Quality Competition, organized by the Aydın Commodity Exchange and registered with the European Union, were announced. A total of 24 producers successfully passed chemical and sensory analyses and were awarded.
The competition aims to highlight the quality of Aydın’s EU geographical indication registered product, Aydın Memecik olive oil, contributing to raising quality standards in the sector and motivating producers.
The award ceremony was attended by key representatives from the Aydın Commodity Exchange, including Chairman Fevzi Çondur and other board members, as well as laboratory and tasting panel experts and producer representatives. Prior to the competition, all olive oil samples underwent chemical analysis by AYTB Laboratory Services, assessing parameters such as free fatty acidity, peroxide, and UV values. Samples that passed were then evaluated sensorially by the Aydın Commodity Exchange Tasting Panel, which scored them on fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency.
Chairman Fevzi Çondur emphasized that the distinguishing feature of Aydın Memecik olive oil is its high phenolic content, which imparts unique fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency, along with strong antioxidant properties.
He noted the geographical indication registration by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in September 2020 and by the European Union in February 2024 as milestones in protecting and promoting this unique product.
The competition awarded 5 bronze, 5 silver, 12 gold, and 2 premium medals. The premium awards were given to olive oils that scored highest in both chemical and sensory evaluations.
The Aydın Commodity Exchange continues to support quality-focused production and branding of local agricultural products through such competitions.
